What you need:

  • screwdriver
  • fine sandpaper
  • Orbital sander
  • small sanding block
  • 1 tube of wood filler
  • Protective mask
  • small spatula
  • paint brush
  • 1 can of clear varnish

How to start the restoration

Below you will find instructions on how to professionally restore an old bed:

  1. In order to restore your old bed, you have to completely dismantle it. Be very careful with the wood so that parts of the bed are not damaged because their corners hit the floor. After you have completely dismantled your bed, look for a room in which you can work undisturbed.
  2. Since you also work with paint and varnish when restoring, you should find a room in which window available. If you have a workshop with an extraction system, that would be even better. When you have all of the parts in your workshop, start sanding down your wooden parts.
  3. Sand the large areas with an orbital sander. The small corners and edges as well as the narrow sides of all wooden parts should be sanded with a narrow wooden sanding block. Restoration is a very careful process, so be careful not to put too much pressure on the sanding wood when sanding.
  4. When you have completely sanded everything off, check the wood for damage. They are looking for small cracks and holes. If you find any damage, use a wooden spatula to remove the damage. The wooden spatula can be bought for little money in the hardware store. You can easily repair the damage with a small spatula.

Your old bed will be like new again

  1. After you have worked on the damage with a filler and the filler has dried properly, sand the areas smooth and clean all the wooden parts to be restored with a dry cloth away. Then paint a layer with clear wood preservative.
  2. When the wood preservative has dried, lightly sand your bed again. Then wipe again with a dry cloth and apply a layer of clear varnish. You can continue restoring while the clearcoat dries. Now take the screw connections.
  3. Unscrew all brackets etc. the end. Then take new, somewhat stronger wood screws, apply some wood glue to the threads of the wood screws and then screw everything back together. So the old brackets have a tight fit again.
  4. Then when you're done restoring, take all of the pieces to their place of installation and reassemble your bed. Tighten the screws properly - but not too tight.
