A paternity test is usually ordered by a court. However, a mother or a father can also commission this privately in order to have certainty. The test can be carried out in different ways. Until a few years ago, the father, mother and child had to undergo a blood test. Thanks to modern analysis options, a saliva test is now sufficient to determine or rule out paternity.

• A paternity test is carried out by comparing the genetic material of the father with that of the child and ideally also with that of the mother. For this purpose, a blood sample can be drawn or a saliva sample can be used. The samples are then compared with one another in the laboratory.

• Since we humans all belong to one species - Homo sapiens - the test only becomes unambiguous from the point of view of biology if a sufficient number of characteristics are determined. A few may be enough if, for example, one of the potential fathers is European and the other is African. Often you will see it in the child immediately after birth, because most children have a dark skin color. When testing, not many markers are necessary for a clear result.
• If, for example, both potential fathers are blond and blue-eyed, several hundred markers should be determined in the laboratory in order to achieve a clear result.
