Who doesn't like to travel south? Unfortunately, most countries charge a fee to use their highways. This is how it works with a vignette for Italy.
Buy a valid vignette in advance
- There is the option of the ‘Telepass. This signaling system is attached inside, for example at the top left of the window on the driver's side. When you pass a toll booth, a signal is automatically sent.
- Use the lanes marked with a “T” for Telepass or directly with “Telepass”. The toll charges will then be automatically debited from your specified current account later, provided that you have agreed a corresponding direct debit authorization.
- You can get vignettes for the motorway, for example online in advance or from the ADAC. Most petrol stations or motorway service stations before and after the border with Italy also have appropriate vignettes for sale.
Other ways to pay the toll in Italy
- The direct payment option is of course still available. To do this, simply pull out a slip of paper at the respective toll station on the motorway.
- Pay in cash or by credit card when you leave the motorway. This option is particularly useful if you do not drive a lot or regularly on the motorways in Italy.

Calculate the toll amount
- You can calculate the toll amount in advance. Use the online tools for this, for example from the route planner or the ADAC.
- Depending on the type of road driven, fees apply. You do not have to pay any tolls on the federal highways marked in blue and therefore you do not need a vignette.
- If you drive on the green marked roads in Italy, you are on a motorway. These are mostly chargeable. The amount of the costs also depends on the distance traveled.
- The fees may vary depending on the type of vehicle. With a normal car you drive cheaper than with one Camper.
