VIDEO: Build artificial rocks yourself
It makes a difference if you choose artificial rocks for one pond, as pure decoration or for a children's playground. As a toy or dam for a pond, you need to pay attention to bearing capacity and safety. The suggestions presented here are primarily suitable for building a purely decorative object yourself. For other purposes, the steps need to be adjusted and the scaffolding reinforced with metal or wood.
How to build artificial rocks yourself
- Use the rabbit wire to form a basic framework for the artificial rocks. It doesn't have to be too precise and only serves as a substrate for the PU foam that is added in the next step. If you don't want your rock to be hollow, you can use the construction foam directly and don't need an additional wire frame.
- Place your wire frame on a tarpaulin and apply the PU foam several centimeters thick. The construction foam is viscous and will not seep through the holes in the wire. Let the foam dry out completely. It will open a little and change its shape.
- Take a sharp knife and shape the dried foam into the shape you want. Cut corners, edges and hollows into them. Make sure to depict your artificial rock as realistically as possible.
- Once you've cut the shape of the artificial rock, put a layer of plaster of paris or shotcrete over your rock. This reinforces the surface and gives it a typical rocky structure.
- To make your rock look even more realistic, you can then paint it. To do this, take a matt acrylic varnish on hand and paint in dark shadows in the edges and joints. Mossy areas can be represented by slightly greenish areas. Let everything dry well before setting up the rock.
