- The density as a physical quantity is a measure of how many molecules there are in a certain volume and how heavy these tiny components are. The more densely packed and the heavier, the greater the density of a substance or material. As a result, gases are generally less dense than liquids and solids.
- The density is defined as d = m / V with m for the mass of the body in kilograms (kg), sometimes also in grams (g) or tons (t). This physical term is colloquially called "weight". V is the volume that this weight occupies, for example in cubic centimeters (cm³), liters (l) or cubic meters (m³).
- You can look up the density of concrete in the relevant tables or in Internet tables. Depending on the composition, the value for concrete is d = 2.1 - 2.6 t / m³. A mean value of d = 2.4 t / m³ = 2400 kg / m³ is suitable for the calculation, so that you are on the safe side for most applications.
Calculate the weight - this is how you proceed
- From the value for the density d, you can easily estimate the weight of a concrete slab, for example, by converting the formula. We have m = d x V. Pay attention to the correct units!
- As an example, the weight of a concrete slab with length l = 1.5 m, width b = 0.8 m and height h = 0.2 m should be calculated. The volume of this concrete slab is V = l x w x h (length times width times height; Pay attention to the same units!) = 1.5 m x 0.8 m x 0.2 m = 0.24 m³.
- Now calculate the weight or the mass, using the density value from above: m = 2400 kg / m³ x 0.24 m³ = 576 kg. Just carry it away quickly - definitely not!
