General care of currants

  • A sunny location is preferred.
  • Do not chop under the bushes (caution: shallow roots).
  • Mulch well to weed to prevent.
  • Water in case of dryness.
  • Floor with compost upgrade.
  • Fertilize with commercially available special fertilizer for berry bushes.
  • The shrub thin out regularly.

Cutting the berry bushes

Thin out red and white currants in spring. Old wood is cut down to the floor. These branches are darker than the new shoots. It is enough if the bushes have about eight healthy shoots.

Black currants only bear on annual wood. This means that right after the summer harvest, you cut off any branch that has already borne.

When cutting all currants, it is important that there is enough air and light between the remaining branches. If the trees grow too dense, diseases can easily set in.

By propagating with cuttings, you can get a whole hedge from a currant. Only patience is required, everything else is done by nature.
