Especially old boats can be really upgraded with a new coat of paint. Boot varnish can be bought in special shops and on the Internet. It can be edited relatively easily.

Boat paint has to meet special requirements, for this reason you should always paint your boat with this special paint and not use conventional paint. Boat varnish must of course be water-repellent and protect the boat body from constant exposure to moisture. In addition, it has to be flexible, because when the waves are rough, the hull is exposed to strong forces that cause it to give way from time to time. In this case, the boat varnish must not flake off.

The right preparations for painting with boat varnish

  1. Before you can start painting, you must completely remove the old paint from the boat. The possibilities with which you can implement this project are very different and also depend on the material of the boat hull.
  2. Is this from wood, you can burn off the old paint with a burner. This procedure is also suitable for other heat-resistant boat hulls. If your boat hull is made of a material that is not heat-resistant, you have to sand off the paint. Make sure that no residue is left on the hull.
  3. Lightly sand the clean surface. This is useful so that the primer holds better.
  4. Apply the primer over the entire area and wait until it is completely dry.

Skilfully apply the paint

  • Make sure you are using the correct brush. It must have soft bristles and must not lose them, because they would mix very unpleasantly with the paint.
  • Apply the boat varnish evenly with the brush. For larger areas you can use a wide brush, smaller brushes with narrow brushes that come well into the corner.
  • If you have decided on a two-tone coating, you have to mask the interfaces. Painter's tape is suitable for this. Start with the first color and let it dry really well. Then remove the tape and apply it to the new coat of paint so you have a straight cut surface and can start the second coat.
  • When you have finished painting the boat, you can still seal the boat varnish with a clear coat.
