Oiling parquet floors to protect them from moisture and scratches is a very old sealing method that has recently come back into fashion. Compared to painting, maintenance is a little more time-consuming, but you can do the sealing yourself and do not have to hire a craftsman.

What you need:

  • oil
  • Paint roller
  • Squeegee
  • Cotton rag

In contrast to painted parquet the pores of the oiled wood are not closed, but filled with oil, so to speak. The wooden surface is therefore not shielded with a protective layer. That wood is not only an optical feature of the room, but also influences the room climate, for example.

Advantages of open-pored parquet finishing

  • In contrast to lacquer, which is used to apply a hard protective layer to the wood, the oil itself hardens the top layer of wood. It penetrates the wood and fills the pores so that no later liquid can penetrate.
  • Oiled parquet can be easily repaired. Areas that are heavily worn out because they are frequently walked on can simply be sanded off. Then oil is applied again to fill up the pores. If you want to touch up varnished parquet inconspicuously, you have to sand the entire surface and repaint.
  • Oiled parquet creates a good room climate. Only the oiled wood is able to absorb and release moisture from the air.
  • The structure of the wood is emphasized by oiling, while a layer of lacquer tends to hide it.

  • The maintenance effort of the oiled floor is somewhat higher, as a maintenance emulsion has to be applied regularly, but the repair effort is significantly reduced with oiled parquet.

This is how you work in the oil

  1. The oil is applied to the parquet with a conventional lacquer roller and spread generously.
  2. Let it take effect only briefly and then peel off the surface with a rubber squeegee so that only a light film of oil sticks to the entire floor. If there is too much oil in one place, dark spots will form there.
  3. Now work the remaining oil film into the wood with a cloth and circular movements.
  4. Let the surface dry for at least 24 hours before polishing your parquet. For larger rooms, it is definitely worth renting a polishing machine.
  5. Apply maintenance oil with a cloth two to three times a year to maintain the protective effect.

Careful: Oil-based rags develop fumes that are highly flammable. Do not only ventilate the premises, but also your work material or clean it thoroughly and never bring it into contact with heat sources.
