Some trips by car or motorcycle require careful planning. At least when the journey is under the motto "The journey is the goal". If you want to drive from Vienna to Innsbruck, you have a few interesting options for the journey.

Innsbruck is located in the western tip of Austria, while the capital of the Alpine country, namely Vienna, is located quite far to the east.

From Vienna to Innsbruck via Germany

  • Are you one of those people who clearly prefer driving on the motorway? Then you have a journey of around 470 kilometers ahead of you. However, not the entire journey takes place in Austria, although both cities are in Austria.
  • Depending on where your starting point is in Vienna, you have to orientate yourself towards the west. Don't worry, everything is well signposted. You have to take the A 1 motorway in the direction of St. Pölten, Linz or Salzburg. Incidentally, the A1 is Austria's first motorway and on the way to Innsbruck you drive the entire length of 292 kilometers to Salzburg.
  • On the way you leave St. Pölten to the north of you, Amstetten is to the south of your route and Linz is to the north before you come to Salzburg. Stay on the A1 to the Salzburg junction and head towards the German border. The signs show Munich and thus ensure that you actually cannot get lost. Now you come to the A 8 in Germany.
  • You drive directly past the southern bank of the Chiemsee and stay on the A 8 to Rosenheim. Only now do you change to the A 93 in the direction of Innsbruck / Brenner. Stay on this train until you come to the Kiefersfelden border crossing and follow the Austrian A 12 to Innsbruck.

The journey on Austrian roads

  • Perhaps you would rather enjoy the landscape in Austria instead of quickly reaching your destination? Then you can comfortably drive between Vienna and Innsbruck on well-developed country and federal roads.
  • Leave Vienna in a southerly direction on the A 2 in the direction of Graz. At the Seebenstein junction, leave the autobahn and take the S 6, the Semmeringer expressway via Bruck an der Mur to St. Michael in Upper Styria.
  • From here you follow the road 113, which runs parallel to the A 9. In Liezen, leave the 113 and follow Landstrasse 320 until it turns into Landstrasse 99 at Bischofshofen. Via the country road 159 you get to the country road 164, which leads you through the middle of the alpine landscape to St. Johann in Tirol. As far as Kirchbichl, take the 178 before you turn left onto the 171, which will ultimately take you to Innsbruck.
  • This tour consists of about 500 kilometers that are absolutely recommendable, because the landscape can hardly be more typical. Mountains, valleys, meadows and forests accompany you on your way, so there are enough points to rest.

Both routes have their charm. If you want to get from Vienna to Innsbruck as quickly as possible, take the motorway. However, the motorways in Austria are subject to tolls. However, if you want to see something of the landscape, you should take the second route. There are plenty of opportunities to rest and a little break here and there is good for both you and your wheeled vehicle.
