Do you know the subject of "detention"? Perhaps your schoolmates or even you yourself had to copy a text as "detention". Do you remember what the reactions were like? These are certainly very different from child to child and especially from adolescent to adolescent. In addition, there are the different reactions of the parents when detective work has been given up. Today, as then, not much has changed in the reactions to detention. They bother some people, they make others angry, others experience them as pointless and others consider them to be absolutely functional. So what to do when students disrupt the class?
Changed school situation - detention as an educational measure?
- At all times it has been difficult to teach students what to do when im classes is disturbed. School history goes back to antiquity and for a long time only the privileged were allowed to go to school. Only from 1800 could z. B. "Higher daughters" attend a school set up for them. The first female doctor to pass the state examination in Germany, Dr. Hope (1855-1916) e.g. B. had to fight for your approvals.
- Being able to study in school was considered a privilege. Growing industrialization, mid-18th Century asked people to watch. For many, the educational path was the train to a "better" life, according to the motto "knowledge is power". Up until the 1950s, parents and students were very motivated to attend schools in order to learn. The "post-war generation" showed themselves to be full of drive to combine knowledge with shaping life in order to achieve prosperity.
- With growing prosperity, ways of life and styles of upbringing changed. The educational interventions that teachers were allowed to do until then, such as B. Detention work, copying, corporal punishment, etc. some of them were justifiably withdrawn (corporal punishment) or heavily criticized. The steadily growing prosperity imperceptibly led to an oversaturation and since the 1980s / 1990s For years, many students can hardly understand why and what they are learning for in school should.
- Parents' right to have a say has increasingly developed since the 1950s and has been divided two-dimensionally. On the one hand, a cooperative-constructive and, on the other hand, an uncooperative-destructive collaboration developed between parents, teachers and students. In the meantime, many schools are "not motivated to learn". Detention work loses its usefulness and neither parents nor students can understand copying certain texts.
- Many teachers are faced with the situation of barely being able to pursue their profession "teaching knowledge". The undisciplined attitude of some students and parents has become excessive, so that neither detention work for copying, nor the existing school law help. Uniform, unambiguous, enforceable rules must be redefined.
- Pedagogical considerations to arouse motivation are useful, because they are used by students who are willing to learn, even if they have difficulty concentrating or learning. In these cases, teachers should be required to develop special teaching units and to be able to support the different "willing to learn".

Avoid copying detentions through personal attitude
- In a discussion with parents, clarify that it is necessary to be reachable by telephone in the event of illness or undisciplined behavior on the part of the students (e. B. Exclusion from class - collection by parents)
- Establish clear rules with the students for teaching and dealing with one another. In doing so, give the students the opportunity to have conflicts of interest, unequal treatment, etc. to be able to address and criticize.
- Step confidently in front of the class and try to create a friendly, shared learning environment by conveying the subject matter in a committed, humorous and motivated manner.
- Be attentive and engage in conversation with each individual student to make good contact. Nevertheless, remain consistent in your decisions.
- Go tolerant, be patient and speak clearly (resp. Pronunciation) towards the students. Do not avoid the conflict, but claim your rights (shouting is bad for your health!).
Redefine the goals and tasks of the school
The aim of the school is to provide education. The task of the teachers is to do educational work. The "educational task", which originally also included detention as an educational measure, can therefore only rely on the support of parental educational work in the area of "education" restrict. Ask the teaching staff for the topic of discussion "The school's task" in order to find a common consensus within "your" school, which you pass on to the school ministry. Offer the following topics to be clarified:
- Which tasks have to be fulfilled by schools (education, educational support). Have schools in the past imposed an excessive amount of educational tasks on themselves? What is feasible, where are the limits?
- What tasks / obligations do parents have (upbringing and motivating children / adolescents, supervision, etc.)?
- Which other institutions support the general educational tasks of the parents (pedagogical family help etc ...)?
- Should decision-making rights be returned to the parents' own responsibility?
