Primroses are early bloomers in a wide variety of colors. But since they can be sensitive to frost, you need to protect them well against it.

What you should already consider when buying

There are many different varieties of the early blooming primrose that can be exposed to different soil conditions and temperatures.

Before buying, you should therefore seek advice from your specialist dealer which variety is suitable for you.

So is z. B. the Primula is a robust perennial that grows in partial shade with acidic, humus-rich soil. The Primula veris (real cowslip), on the other hand, also needs partial shade, but a water-permeable, fertile soil.

The Primula denticulata (ball-primrose) need a moist, humus-rich soil. Pillow primroses (hybrids of Primula vulgaris), on the other hand, which you most often find in stores, should not be too warm, but they also cannot tolerate frost.

The right time to plant

Already in January or February you can buy primroses in pots. These are initially intended as plants for the apartment, as the frost outside is too strong for them.

Make sure that the primroses are in a light spot and that there is no waterlogging in the pot. This causes the plants to rot and perish. The month of March is suitable for planting out when there is only light frost.

So the primrose can be protected on frosty nights

If you carefully protect the primrose, it will bloom again next spring.

From minus two degrees you should cover primroses that grow outside. It is sufficient to cover a few layers of newspaper or fleece over the flowers and leaves.

Primroses in window boxes, especially those with little soil, should be placed against a protected house wall or in the apartment during night frost.

In winter, when there is a constant risk of frost, you can bring the plants completely indoors and thus protect them from frost. This is why it makes sense to plant primroses in baskets that you can carry. This enables the spring flowers to last for years.
