You can make a suitable balcony privacy screen yourself

Almost all balconies are equipped with metal or wooden railings. The actual Privacy screen must therefore be integrated into the existing railing, which is used for safety, or be adapted to this.

• Colorful awning fabrics, which are often offered cheaply, are suitable for protecting a balcony with an open metal railing against prying eyes. If you have the exact dimensions plus seam allowances, the awning fabric can be cut in the shop.
• Sturdy tabs that attach to the cross braces of the balcony railing are easy to sew. The fabric should be stretched tight so that it does not flutter too much in the wind and so that the material and the seams are not stressed too much.

• A balcony privacy screen made of reed mats is easy to make yourself. Reed mats are available in hardware stores. They have to be cut to the exact dimensions of the railing. Care should be taken not to damage the wires or plastic threads that hold the mats together. If this cannot be avoided, the mats can be rewired immediately so that their shape and stability are retained.
• Once you have cut the right size, it is best to attach the mat to the cross and lengthways bars of the balcony railing with wire. Tip: Leftovers from the reed mat can be used very well and appropriately to cover balcony flower pots.

You can also make a privacy screen for the balcony yourself by planting the railing with greenery. There are several ways to do this.

• For privacy protection, you should ensure that you only provide it in the areas from which prying eyes are common. A complete wall takes away your view from yourself. Accordingly, you should build up your protection step by step and see whether your measures are sufficient or whether further measures are required to ensure that you are protected.

• ivy, planted in tubs or boxes, entwines the balcony railing. Although it grows slowly, it has the advantage that it stays green even in winter.

• The nasturtium grows very quickly and has a beautiful flowering. It is easy to put on and easy to care for. The climbing mixture should be chosen, not the ground covering one. Seeds only have to be bought once here, because in autumn the seeds can be collected for the next year.

• The wisteria is a very fast growing plant. It wraps around the railing, loses its leaves in autumn, and sprouts again very quickly and densely in spring, so that privacy protection over the balcony season is guaranteed again.
