Choose the wood for rustic garden furniture

Since you want to build rustic garden furniture yourself, you should clarify in advance which wood you want to use. These instructions assume that you want to build two massive garden benches and a garden table.

  • First you choose the wood for your rustic garden table. Oak wood, for example, would be recommended for your garden table. You should find a carpenter's shop that has a large oak trunk in the storage area. The trunk should have a diameter of at least 100 cm. You should have a 15 cm thick slice cut from this trunk. Oak wood is very suitable as a material for your rustic garden furniture, as oak wood is very hard and durable.
  • Then you should have an oak trunk with a diameter of 30 cm cut to a length of 100 cm. You then use this trunk to make the leg for your garden table. Now you have all the material for your garden table and only need to get the wood for your rustic benches.
  • The rustic benches for your garden furniture are made of normal spruce wood. You can cut a 200 cm long spruce trunk exactly in the middle, lengthways. The spruce trunk should have a diameter of at least 40 cm. Then you need four 20 cm x 20 cm square bars that should be 80 cm long. When that is done, you have all the parts for your rustic patio furniture together.

The table and benches are assembled

  1. Now your rustic garden furniture is assembled. Take your oak table top and mark the center on the bottom. Then mill a 10 cm deep hole in the oak wood exactly in the middle. The hole has a diameter of 30 cm.

  3. After the hole has been milled, use a spatula to spread a lot of wood glue inside the 10 cm deep recess. Then insert the 100 cm long oak beam into the recess and then clamp the table top and table leg with two long screw clamps.
  4. While the wood glue is drying on your rustic garden table, fix the 20 cm x 20 cm square timbers to the left and right of the spruce seats. The square timbers are screwed exactly in the middle and flush with the upper edge. Use very long wood screws so that the seats have a firm hold afterwards.
  5. In the next step you first dig a 30 cm deep and 31 cm wide hole for your garden table. Then you stir precast concrete and pour a 10 cm layer of precast concrete into the hole. Then insert the table. Now you also spill precast concrete around the supporting leg until the hole is filled.
  6. After you have propped up the garden table, dig the 30 cm deep holes for the 20 cm x 20 cm square beams. The holes are, however, created with a side length of 21 cm each. Then pour the benches and support them properly. When the ready-mixed concrete has dried properly, you have made it, you have selected wood for your rustic garden furniture and then made the garden furniture yourself.

For this work you need a second man to set the rustic garden furniture.
