More postage for colored envelopes?

  • Officially, the Post AG transport regulations in Germany stipulate that increased postage is incurred for colored envelopes. That is 90 cents instead of 55 cents for the standard letter. Also 90 cents instead of 45 cents for a postcard. That was decided at the beginning of 2010.
  • However, Vice President Klaus Ehrnsperger himself says that small amounts will not be objected to. This means that colored envelopes up to 5 pieces, which have only been franked with normal postage, will not be returned. These are delivered normally without the recipient receiving any additional payment.

Why is the postage higher?

  • The reason for the increased postage is that the mail can be sorted. Letters are automatically read in the Post's letter center. This is done with high-performance scanners. The orange barcode, which can be found on the bottom of the letters, also comes from these scanners. Colored envelopes have the disadvantage that the barcode of the scanner cannot be read on them. As a result, these letters have to be sorted by hand, which increases the workload.
  • However, if these are only a few letters that have to be sorted, this is no longer a burden. However, if you intend to send more than 5 letters with colored envelopes, then you should find out more from the automation officer. He can tell you exactly whether your letters are covered by the increased transport fee. You will receive the address of your automation officer at your post office. Your mail is guaranteed to arrive on time for the festival!
