Use aluminum foil in the microwave

It is generally accepted that metals and aluminum foil do not belong in the microwave. But why is this actually the case? Perhaps you have asked yourself this question before.

Microwaves generate electrical currents in metals.

Metals in the microwave

There is still a persistent rumor that metals are generally not in the microwave belong.

  • In fact, this is largely true. But there are exceptions (if only a few).
  • For example, you can put a cup of water in the device and place a teaspoon in it. A so-called boiling delay is achieved as a result.
  • The water (or the liquid in general) can sometimes be heated well above the boiling point without it starting to boil.
  • However, this is only one of the few exceptions. Metals can - depending on their strength - absorb the energy of the microwaves and in this way delay the heating (or cooking) of the food.

If you are looking for a new built-in stove for your kitchen, you should consider whether ...

  • In the worst case, sparks will also form, which should be avoided in any case. This is also the case with aluminum foil when it is put in the microwave.

What happens when aluminum foil is put into the device?

  • As already mentioned, the radiation creates a very high electrical current in metals. The power in the device is not exactly low, which is why currents of more than 20 amperes can also occur in metals (which also includes aluminum foil).
  • Due to these high electrical currents, the thin aluminum foil heats up suddenly, which in most cases leads to very high levels of sparking.
  • This is usually the case immediately after switching on the device or a few seconds afterwards.
  • Therefore, it is better to avoid such experiments.
  • By the way, there are also dishes that contain gold leaf or something similar. Such dishes should also not be used in the microwave.
  • As a general rule, metals should not be used in the microwave in most cases. To do this, it is best to observe the operating instructions for the device and be sure to follow the safety instructions contained therein.
