Moisture can collect anywhere and at some point inevitably lead to mold. This works particularly quickly in rooms that are rarely used. Therefore, in the basement in particular, care should be taken and something should be done immediately to counteract this moisture.

Often the basement is simply used as a practical space to store various things. You then notice far too late that moisture has accumulated somewhere in the basement.

Take action against moisture in the basement - this is how it works

  • The apartment is ventilated several times a day. This allows the air to circulate and no moisture builds up anywhere. If this air circulation is absent for a longer period of time, then moisture collects, which can later turn into mold.
  • This can happen particularly quickly if the rooms are also unheated. This is usually the case in the basement. The lack of heating air and insufficient ventilation accelerate the fact that moisture can build up in the basement.

Ventilation helps against moisture

  • Especially in the warm months you should let enough fresh air into the cellar. Open the basement windows during the day and ensure a draft in the basement rooms. If possible, open the cellar door. A lot of air helps very well against moisture in the basement.
  • Also make sure that large devices are not placed directly on the wall, but always leave a few centimeters free between them. Because only in this way can the air circulate everywhere.

Using the basement properly

  • If you also use the basement as a laundry room or drying room, then you need to ventilate even more. Because especially when drying clothes, even if you use a dryer, warm and humid air is created that has to escape again.
  • In addition, never place large devices or cabinets right up against the wall. Always leave a few centimeters free so that air can circulate there as well.

Remove moisture in the basement with dryers

  • Unfortunately, despite all the care, it cannot be avoided that the moisture builds up in the basement. Usually the walls damp, it starts to smell musty, and the first mold forms.
  • Specialized construction dryers are available from specialist retailers that can dry damp walls again. A cheaper alternative are large boxes that are filled with special salt granules. This salt removes moisture from the air and the cellar becomes dry again. These devices are very useful against moisture in the basement.

Ventilate the cellar as often as possible and, if necessary, set up a heater every now and then during the cold months in order to immediately contain the moisture and dampness that builds up.
