Use the TeamViewer over a private network

From version 3.5 of TeamViewer it is possible to connect to another computer via a virtual, private network. To do this, you have to go through the following steps:

  1. Install "Use Team Viewer VPN" on both computers. Either do it during the first TeamViewer installation or afterwards under the "Advanced" option.
  2. To connect to another computer, click on the "Remote Control" tab.
  3. Now select "VPN" under "Establish connection".
  4. In the window that appears, enter the TeamViewer ID of the computer you want to connect to.

  5. Confirm your entry with the "Connect to partner" button.
  6. After you have entered the other person's password, all you need to do is log in. The connection is established.
  7. To end the VPN connection, click on the "Close connection" option. This is located in the VPN dialog of the TeamViewer.

You have these options with a VPN connection

  • If you have several VPN networks, you can limit yourself to one that you want to work with in TeamViewer. The corresponding option can be found under "Current VPN connection".
  • You can also display the "status" of your connection, namely the IPs of the connected computers, at any time.
  • If you want to find out whether the VPN connection is actually up, you can click the "Test ping" button. There a signal is sent to the partner computer, which you can then evaluate.
  • The "Open Explorer" button enables you to directly access the Explorer on the other computer. You may have to confirm your access authorization with a password.
