An old computer saying goes: never change a running system. Whenever an update or changes are integrated into a running system, malfunctions or failures can occur. The causes are varied and can never be explained in a few sentences, if at all. Firefox is no exception, but everything can be repaired by resetting it.

Firefox isn't always perfect either.

Firefox offers many features to update

  • You can find an almost unmistakable list of updates on the Firefox homepage by typing the following command into the address line: "about: config". Most of this is of no concern to the average user.
  • In many cases, the "Update" function in Firefox is set to "automatic". In this case, the program will download all available updates without being asked. If you want to check this, however, you have to deactivate this function: mozilla.com/de/firefox/extras/updates.
  • Only select those extensions that are really relevant to your needs. In the event of a malfunction, you have a better overview of the updates in question under "about: config".
  • If you know which entry is causing the problems, the error will be resolved quickly. Select the relevant function under "about: config", then select "Edit / reset".

This is how you can reset Firefox to "default"

  • For all versions of Windows, you will need to try getting into Firefox Safe Mode to reset. The following applies to WIN 7: Start / Search: firefox-safe-mode. For other WIN variants, try the following: Start / All Programs / Firefox / Safe Mode.

If you have started Safe Mode in Firefox, you can use it completely ...

  • In the "Safe Mode" dialog box, under Settings, you will now find the line "Reset all user settings". The operation is irreversible and yours profile must be restored by hand.
  • To do this, enter the following after "Start / Run":% UserProfile% \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles. There you will also find a backup of the bookmarks in the sub-folders, which can then be re-imported.
