You can throttle a scooter yourself to 25 km / h. However, the prerequisite is that you install an original throttle set. This is the only way to approve the throttled scooter by the TÜV.

Most scooters with a 50ccengine are designed for a speed of 45 km / h. If you only have a moped test certificate, you have to throttle the scooter to 25 km / h in order to drive it on public roads. If you are technically skilled, you can do the throttling yourself.

How to throttle a scooter to 25 km / h

  1. First of all, you have to get a suitable throttle set from your specialist dealer. This consists of a spacer for the variator and a main jet for the carburettor.
  2. You should definitely keep the packaging of the throttle set, or at least the item number. You will need the data later for proof at TÜV.
  3. You will then need to open the carburetor housing and unscrew the main jet. Then screw in the nozzle that belongs to the throttle set. Replacing the nozzle will reduce the engine performance of the scooter.

  6. Then loosen the front variator disc. To do this, you have to fix the pane in place with a block of wood or something similar. Then loosen the fastening screw with a ring spanner. This allows you to pull one half of the variator disc off the drive shaft.
  7. You then have to put the spacer from the throttle set on the drive shaft and reattach the variator disc. By installing the spacer, the greatest possible translation is reduced. Then close the variator cover.
  8. After you have carried out the work carefully, the scooter should only be able to travel at 25 km / h. You should definitely check that out.
  9. However, it is not enough to throttle the scooter to 25 km / h. You must have this change approved by the TÜV. At the TÜV you also have to prove which parts you have installed. Then the new maximum speed of 25 km / h is also entered in the operating license. You can then use the scooter as a moped.

If you throttle a scooter to 25 km / h, it is only approved for one person. You also have to ride it on bike paths, provided that they are also approved for mopeds.
