Basic information on stripes in the lawn

You will surely suspect that the stripes in the grass on the soccer field are created by mowing one strip from right to left and the other from left to right.

  • If you try this at home, however, you will only get a hint of these streaks, and they usually disappear after a few days, sometimes even hours.
  • The professional clubs have special lawnmowers that have a horizontal axis, similar to the old hand-operated lawnmowers. If you mow evenly with such a lawnmower, you will get nicer stripes.
  • The mowers in the stadiums are also equipped with rollers. Immediately after mowing, the blades of grass are laid in one direction with a large, heavy roller. If you want to mow the lawn in strips at home, you have to roll the lawn additionally afterwards.

Incidentally, the pattern is not created by chance or is left to the creativity of the groundskeeper. The boundaries between light and dark must run exactly through the center, the penalty area and the five-meter line. Until 2004, other patterns were also allowed to be mowed into the lawn.
