Build your own metal nutcracker machine

In many families, the nutcrackers are taken out of the drawers and cupboards just before Christmas. If you don't already have one, you could also build a small machine to crack your nuts. Everything you need should be found in any well-equipped home improvement workshop.

What you need:

  • 1 galvanized steel plate, 2 cm thick
  • 2 galvanized square bars
  • 2 galvanized steel plates, 1 cm thick
  • 1 scriber
  • 1 lathe
  • 1 milling bench
  • 1 tape measure
  • 1 welding machine
  • 1 welding shield
  • 1 round bolt
  • 1 drill
  • 1 5 mm drill bit
  • 1 hacksaw

Build a small machine as a nutcracker

Your machine, which will then serve as a nutcracker, will not be too big. It consists of a few metal parts, some of which will be movable. With this component, you use the leverage to crack open the shells of the nuts.

  1. Since you want your nutcracker to be a small mechanical machine made of metal, you must first cut a 2 cm thick galvanized steel plate to the dimensions 20 cm x 10 cm. Then you need a nut holder, which is cut from a 4 cm x 4 cm piece of solid metal to a length of 10 cm. This piece of metal should also be galvanized.
  2. Mill a 3 cm wide and 0.5 cm deep notch in one side of the material in the center of this nut holder. Then mill another recess 2 cm wide and 0.2 cm deep. Then there is a third recess that is only 1 cm wide and 0.1 cm deep. These recesses are intended to prevent the nuts from sliding out of the nutcracker later.
  3. When this is done, weld the nut holder in the middle of the base plate. In the next step you cut the counterpart to your nut holder. This time, however, the 4 cm x 4 cm piece of steel is 18 cm long and is turned around on one side to 5 cm in length and 2 mm in depth.

Complete the lever

  1. Now that you've twisted off the handle on your lever, drill a 10mm hole in the metal on the opposite side, 1.5 cm from the end. The hole should lie exactly on the center axis of the steel part, so that there is still a gap of 1.5 cm left up and down. Next, the little machine that is supposed to serve as a nutcracker gets two mounting parts.
  2. Shelf to hang up boats, build yourself

Since you and your family are passionate canoeists and everyone is one of them ...

  3. These parts are cut from 1 cm thick galvanized steel to a length of 8 cm, the width is 3 cm. These two plates also have a 10 mm hole each, which is drilled to match the hole in your lever part. Now you should twist off a small, 8 cm long bolt that is 9.5 mm in diameter.
  4. At each end, 7.5 mm from the edge, drill a 5 mm hole in the stud on both sides. Now you have all the parts of your little nutcracker machine together and you can weld the two holder plates behind the nut holder in parallel. This is done exactly in such a way that the lever arm can then be fitted between the two plates with the bolt.
  5. When the lever arm sits between the brackets, you still have to insert two split pins into the holes of the bolt and you can tackle the first nut.

After welding the socket receptacle to the base plate, you should apply zinc spray to the welding points.
