The heating does not go out any more

If the heating does not go out, this is not only a waste of energy, but also more than annoying, especially in the bedroom. Fortunately, the problems are usually easy to solve.

Why the heating doesn't go out anymore

If the heater continues to run undisturbed, although you turn off the valve, there are usually very simple reasons:

  • You can almost always say a small cause, big effect. It's due to a small pin sticking out of the valve and being pushed in by the thermostat knob when the heater is supposed to go off. If the pin or the underlying cone seat is stuck in the valve, the heating will no longer go out.
  • It is less common that the thermostatic valve itself is broken and does not move the pen. But that also happens.
  • They sometimes have small pins on the valve to help narrow the area. Perhaps with such a pen it is only set that the heating cannot be switched off. Move these pins if you have any.
  • The following can only happen if the thermostat has an external sensor to measure the room temperature at a location other than the heating. You have through furniture or other objects cut off the sensor from the room air in such a way that it constantly reports that it is too cold in the room. In this case, the only thing that helps is to install another thermostat or to clear the remote sensor again.
  • Remove the radiator valve - this is how it works

You rarely have to remove the radiator valve, but it is still ...

It is not a defect if the thermostatic valve prevents the heating from going out completely in severe frost.

Correct the fault on the radiator valve

  1. Turn the thermostatic valve fully open.
  2. Unscrew the thermostat from the radiator. All you have to do is unscrew a union nut or a corrugated ring. With many heating valves this works without tools, otherwise you use the pipe wrench. Don't worry, there won't be a kick water the end.
  3. Use the combination pliers to pull and push the pin out and back in several times. That makes him flexible again.
  4. Carefully tap the pin several times with a small hammer, similar to hammering a nail into the wall. But please carefully and with feeling.
  5. Then move the pen again.
  6. Put the valve back on. Make sure that the markings on the thermostat and valve match, if any.
  7. Turn the thermostat to off and wait to see if the heating goes out. If it still does not go out, replace the thermostat with a new one. It works as described,
  8. If the heating still does not go out, the valve itself must be defective. In that case you have to turn off the radiator on the valve that is located where the water flows into the heater, which is usually a large hexagon nut. Many heating systems do not have this second valve, in which case the water in the heating system must be drained. You can often do this without draining the water, but then it splashes out. In any case, the heating system must be switched off and cooled down.
  9. If the radiator is shut down, you can now change the stuffing box on the valve. The stuffing box is the part that the pin protrudes from. You can usually just unscrew it and replace it with a new one. But it could lead to leakage problems. You should rather let a specialist come in here.

Remember that in rented apartments the problem with the heating stop going off is a matter of the landlord. As soon as you need to replace parts, be sure to talk to them about it. You should always have the stuffing box replaced by him.
