Tinker book covers - get creative!

  • To bind a book, you can use any material that can be cut to size, is relatively flexible and sticks well. Different papers and fabrics are best suited, but you do not have to buy them ready-made, but can also be tinkered with yourself.
  • In the sewing supplies you will find various fabrics, from imitation cowhide to retro fabric - choose the material that matches the content of the book. A black velvet fabric, for example, goes well with the Twilight range and can be spiced up with a red border. Western books can be upgraded with leather scraps.
  • You will also find what you are looking for in a craft shop or a bookstore's stationery. Lillifee sheets, Harry Potter paper or a wide variety of other motifs add value to any boring book. However, you should reinforce transparent and other fine papers later with cardboard.
  • Are you bored of commercial papers? Just create your own paper. All you need is paper, water, two plastic tubs and two scooping frames. You can incorporate memorabilia such as dried flowers, napkins or photos into the still wet paper pulp.
  • You can also get great papers with paste painting or by marbling a paper with oil paints. Search in the hardware store, here you will find unusual textured wallpapers and self-adhesive borders. You can also use art prints or enlarged photos as book covers.

Embed a book - this is how it works

  1. First, measure how big your book cover needs to be. To do this, lay the book open on your paper or fabric, mark the corner points and add about 2-4 centimeters on all sides.
  2. Coat the old book cover with bookbinding glue or use spray glue. Then place the fabric or paper around the center of the closed book. Press firmly all over to remove any air bubbles.
  3. Cut your tinkered cover at the top and bottom of the book spine so that you can fold it over.
  4. Cut the corners of the book 2 millimeters from the edge at a 45-degreeangle at an angle and fold it over.
  5. For a nicer look inside, stick two endpapers in the front and back of your book. They should be a little smaller than the actual book so that about 5 mm of the new cover can still be seen.

Hardcover books are best embellished. Simply replace the paper cover with a book cover that you have designed yourself. Do you want school books beautify, inquire beforehand whether the books need to be returned after the school year.
