It is often recommended not to consume more than a maximum of 20 mg of alcohol per day; the limit of 15 mg even applies to women. But what about beer? How many grams are there in one liter and when did you reach 20 g?

Different beers differ in weight.
Different beers differ in weight.

If you want to know not just how much the pure alcohol weighs, but the whole beer, then you also need to consider the water content.

How many ingredients does beer have?

  • A liter of beer consists of the basic ingredients malt, hops and above all water. Malz means grainwhich has been soaked in water and thereby germinated; when germination has occurred, the grain is then dried again.
  • Yeast is also added so that the ingredients ferment and thus ultimately the alcohol is produced. Malt has a lot of starch, which is then converted into sugar. The yeast in turn feeds on the sugar and ferments it to alcohol. This also creates carbonic acid, some of which remains in the liquid. Remnants of barley or hops, on the other hand, are filtered out.
  • If you want to calculate how many grams are in a liter of beer, you have to take into account that there are different types of drink, in which the alcohol content also fluctuates. Because in order to calculate the number of grams, you need the density, i.e. the ratio of mass to volume and that differs slightly between water and alcohol.

Calculate the grams in a liter

  • If you want to calculate how many grams a beer has, you should first calculate how much alcohol and water there is in the barley juice.

A glass of beer or wine in the evening is part of everyday enjoyment for many, but how many ...

  • For example, if a beer contains 5% alcohol, then one liter consists of 50 ml (0.05 l) alcohol and 950 ml (0.95 l) water; but the liquid also contains starch or other aromas and carbonic acid, so it is not pure water; however, these additions more or less balance each other out.
  • The water has a density of approximately 1000 g / l, i.e. a column of water with a volume of 1 l would weigh 1000 g or 1 kg. Alcohol has a slightly lower density, namely around 790 g / l.
  • Since density is the weight divided by the volume, so you can calculate the weight by multiplying the volume by the density.
  • 0.95 l of water multiplied by 1 kg / l result in 950 g. For alcohol, the result is 0.05 l multiplied by 0.79 kg / l = 0.039 g or 39 mg. The entire liter of barley juice weighs 989 grams.
