Design simple nativity plays yourself
In small communities in particular, simple nativity plays are often designed by themselves. The scope of the nativity play depends on the number of players and so you often have to improvise. The Christmas story always stays the same, but there are ways in which you can design some passages more freely.

- Here you can certainly improvise by shortening texts, reducing the number of shepherds and highwaymen or double-casting small roles.
- Simple nativity plays in most cases begin with the crier sent by Augustus, the emperor of Rome. The crier only has this one and very short role, so that he can easily take on the speaker. The speaker leads through the simple nativity play with brief explanations between the individual roles.

- Camp shepherds see the bright light in Bethlehem, it blinds them, they look astonished at the sky when an angel appears to them. He proclaims great joy to them that Jesus Christ was born. They set out to find that child, swaddled in diapers and lying in the crib. Simple nativity plays can also get by with one or two shepherds.
- The speaker announces the three wise men from the Orient. They too saw the star and followed it to worship their new king. For the holy kings you need three more players.
- Caspar prophesies Jesus Christ that he will rule with goodness and mercy and gives him as a token of his homage gold.
- Melchior proclaims that Jesus Christ will redeem the world from lost and guilt and gives him incense as a token of his devotion.
- Balthasar declares that Jesus will lead people out of trouble and thanks him with myrrh.
- Finally, the speaker proclaims, joy for all people in the world.

Simple nativity plays like this require at least eight players. Of course, there are no upper limits. The number of shepherds can be increased at will, highwaymen, wise men and the landlord can take on additional roles.
