You want to own a customized piggy bank and not a bought one. Then make one out of paper mache. This costs you next to nothing and you can then put the saved money straight into your new piggy bank. Use the following guide and your piggy bank will move in pretty quickly.

Making paper mache

  • You can make paper mache according to the instructions by soaking small torn newspaper or small cut egg cartons in ready-made wallpaper paste and then mixing them together nicely. You have to put in enough newspaper to make a nice solid mixture. This type of paper mache works very well for items that are not very large and not hollow on the inside either. For example for the heads of dolls.
  • For figures that are to be a little larger and have a cavity or a wire frame, paper mache is suitable, which is created in layers. This means that you spread wallpaper paste on a balloon or on a wire frame and place pieces of newspaper on it. You paint over it again with wallpaper glue and you can put another layer of newspaper on it. The finished paper mache layer should be about 3 to 4 mm. This then has to dry out completely before you can continue working.

  4. Cover this again with wallpaper paste and on top of it comes another newspaper layer. Proceed like this until the paper mache layer is approx. 3 to 4 mm.
  5. Then let this work dry until everything is nice and firm. Meanwhile, prepare the 4 paws of your piggy bank from an egg pack. To do this, cut 4 such corners out of the middle, which you then glue on where the paws should be. This works best if you coat these areas again with a little wallpaper paste, put on the corners, put pieces of newspaper all around again and coat them with glue again. This is how the paws hold and you can no longer see how they were attached.
  6. For the ears, cut a triangle out of cardboard and attach it like the paws, where you have to make sure to glue the triangles a little round to the shape of an ear receive.
  7. In the same way, glue an approx. 5 cm wide piece of toilet paper roll to the front. You can fill this piece of roll with paper and then glue on a smooth piece as a finish.
  8. The back is where the balloon of the balloon can still be seen. Now cut it open and try to remove the balloon, of course only what can be removed without force.
  9. Roll a tail out of a newspaper, squeeze this roll tightly and insert it into the resulting hole and fasten it like paws. Then bring the tail into the right shape and coat it with wallpaper paste so that it holds the shape well.
  10. When everything is well dried, paint the pig with white paint first so that later no writing from the paper mache shimmers through more and then you can make your paper mache piggy bank with pink color or any other color, just as you like, painting.
  11. After the paint has dried, glue or paint on your eyes and mouth and your piggy bank is ready.
  12. Finally, the slit on the back is cut into it with a very sharp cutter knife.
