Seal the terrace with synthetic resin

Sealing a terrace with synthetic resin makes it easy to care for, but there are a few things you have to do to ensure that the terrace is not damaged.

Seal before damage occurs.

What you need:

  • Sealing tape or filler
  • primer
  • Synthetic resin coating
  • Tools

Synthetic resin seals are not suitable for all terraces

  • You should never seal wooden floors with synthetic resin, because the wood works under the seal and makes it leak. In addition, airtight packaging of wood is never advisable as it can rot.
  • You cannot renovate a terrace with synthetic resin - if the tiled floor is cracked, if the wall connections have been incorrectly designed, sealing with synthetic resin is of no use either. On the contrary, if you seal a terrace with a damp subsurface, the moisture cannot escape and frost damage occurs in winter.
  • Sealing of terrace floors is therefore best carried out immediately after tiling, at least before there is serious damage or damage. Instead of a tiled floor, you can also apply a synthetic resin coating.

How to seal outdoor floors

  1. It is best to start working on the terrace in spring, as soon as there is no more frost.
  2. Take a critical look at the surface of your terrace. Are there loose tiles, cracked tiles or is the terrace floor hitting at a right angle? For example, if you have a wall without a coving there, consider adding the entire floor renew. Sealing alone will not be enough.
  3. Sealing tiles - this is how it's done

Tiles require special care. Especially when it comes to expensive goods ...

  4. In any case, remove all loose and broken tiles, ideally using sealing tape or special filler to create covings along the wall connections. Let everything dry well, because you can only seal the terrace when the surface has dried out.
  5. Renew the tiles and grout. Even if no tiles had to be removed, you should replace the grout if you notice any damage. The terrace floor must also dry now.
  6. Clean the terrace floor immediately before sealing. Do not get the floor wet while doing this. Follow the instructions given by the manufacturer of the sealant for further measures.

Common methods of sealing patios with synthetic resin

Almost all manufacturers offer complete systems. If you only ever use one system, then you are sealed with the terrace on the safe side. It is common to apply a primer that serves as a primer and then the actual sealer.

  • There are thin, highly transparent synthetic resin coatings that are used to protect tiles and joints and to seal the joints so that water does not get in there. This type of sealing is also often referred to as impregnation.
  • Thicker coatings are often up to 2 mm thick and colored. These not only seal tiles, but also concrete floors and are usually applied as the actual floor covering. Paint flakes or sand can be sprinkled into this coating to make the floor more beautiful.

Sealing the terrace is done in a similar way to normal painting, you spread the synthetic resin product onto the floor with a roller or a brush.
