Extend the explanation by saying that there are also some non-metals that are made up of atoms, for example sulfur or phosphorus.
- Ions have an electrical charge. If this is positive, it is called a cation; if it is negative, the term anion is used. The substances are also known as ionic substances.
- The most important molecules are oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and the water. Since they are so different from metals, your child has a basic knowledge that will make it easier for them to get started with chemistry.
