What is baking soda?

The chemical name of baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate and has the molecular formula Na2CO3.  Because of its many uses, our grandmothers and great-grandmothers enjoyed cooking and cleaning with it. Today we know baking soda primarily as an ingredient in baking powder. Few people know that baking soda can also be used to wash clothes. The white powder is also available in bulk packs in drugstores and supermarkets. However, do not confuse baking soda with soda ash (sodium carbonate). This reacts with humidity and acids much more violent than baking soda and is therefore valid in Germany as a hazardous substance.

During the drying time you can clean the lint filter (at the bottom of the washing machine). To do this you have to open the flap and the lock. Clean the sieve as described in the operating instructions and close the flap again. Now it's the turn of the rubber seals. Clean the rubber and the spaces between the door seal on the porthole with a baking soda solution and a soft cloth. The porthole itself can also be cleaned in this way. When everything has dried thoroughly, the washing machine is ready for use again.
