Cinnamon - differences and important ingredients

There are two dominant types of cinnamon on the world market:

  • Ceylon cinnamon (usually from Sri Lanka)
  • Cassia cinnamon (origin and common cultivation in southern China)

All cinnamon species and products are the dried bark of the tropical cinnamon tree. The Ceylon cinnamon is considered to be the rarer and higher quality cinnamon. Compared to cassia cinnamon, this has a more pronounced aroma and a milder spiciness. Ceylon cinnamon is more expensive than cassia cinnamon.

The Chinese cassia cinnamon determines world trade. Its bark is coarser and darker than Ceylon cinnamon bark. The most important difference between the two types of cinnamon lies in the curamine flavoring. While hardly any curcamine is found in Ceylon cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon contains higher amounts of it.

All cinnamon varieties contain polyphenols. The plant substances have a positive effect on the human intestinal flora and promote digestion. The essential oil eugenol produces further positive effects in cinnamon. It has a disinfecting effect and can therefore help with infectious diseases.

Cinnamon has these healthy effects

Due to the ingredients in cinnamon, numerous positive health aspects can be observed. The effects are mostly scientifically confirmed. Cinnamon can help acutely and/or preventively with the following complaints:

Cinnamon - only in moderation, not in bulk

Due to the flavoring substance curamin, cinnamon can be toxic to humans if consumed in excess. This applies primarily to the Chinese cassia cinnamon. Curamin is a phytochemical that damages the liver and can cause cancer.

Pregnant women in particular should refrain from excessive consumption of cinnamon in the form of dietary supplements.
