How to build a trellis for raspberries

instagram viewer

The raspberry not only finds grateful buyers in children. It takes little effort to grow them in the garden yourself. This includes the construction of a climbing frame, which will be discussed here.

What dimensions must the climbing aid have?

Plan a space of about 50 cm in the row for each plant. Then you should find out about the growth height of the respective variety, so that the plants also experience real support at the right height. It is advisable to plan a first support at knee height and the second about 30 cm below the maximum height of the plants.

How stable does the scaffolding have to be?

You have two options for making the structure windproof:

 a) By driving stakes or ground spikes at least 0.7 m deep, or

 b) You brace the scaffolding with 4 ropes.

The second variant requires more space, similar to building a tent. However, the scaffolding can be dismantled after the season without any significant effort. If you prefer this method, you have to tension the 4 ropes at an angle of about 45° on the front sides so that they stabilize in all directions.

Two stands give shape to the construction

An easy way to build the two side panels is a frame made of battens or strong battens. From this, carve two rectangles with the required height and approx. 30cm width. They form the front sides of the scaffolding and are erected using ground spikes or held loosely by the ropes. To connect the ground spikes, you still need short square timbers to which the scaffolding can be screwed.

Another variant for the two front sides would be a single stand, to which 30 cm long crosspieces are then attached at the intended height.

Now it's time for the covering

The climbing aid now consists of a connection between the front sides. You don't necessarily have to use a rigid material to do this. Hit the frames at the correct height, or in the crossbars of the frame2 staples halfway through each, then thread a clothesline or flexible wire through. This is how it is created a cage into which the plant then grows. The line does not have to have a noticeable tension so that the side parts do not tilt towards the middle. When tensioning the rope, however, you need an assistant to set it up and a support to prevent the parts from falling over. This can be a fork or an iron rake.

These instructions do not claim to be infallible, but are intended to inspire you to realize your own ideas. Depending on what options you have and what your requirements are, you will certainly achieve a useful result. I wish you good luck!
