Christmas is officially over after Epiphany

  • At 6. January is the feast of the three kings, which is also called the epiphany or the apparition of the Lord. The Catholic end of the Christmas season is occasionally Maria Candlemas

  • There is another variant that marks the end of Christmas. For the Catholic Church, the Christmas season does not end until the 2nd February, exactly 40 days after Christmas. This day is called Mary Candlemas - or alternatively the Presentation of the Lord.
  • Strictly speaking, however, Maria Candlemas is an outdated day, which used to be seen as the official end of the Christmas season and was also celebrated as a public holiday. However, following a reform of the Catholic liturgical calendar in the 1960s, this date is no longer valid.
  • Today this day is no longer an official holiday, but in some Catholic churches the decorated trees and nativity scenes are also in the churches up to this point. In some regions of Saxony and the Ore Mountains, Maria Candlemas is still celebrated in the churches and celebrated as the start of the Christmas season.
