What can be done against swallow nests on the house?
Most people love to watch the swallows dance through the air in the summer. But there are some unfortunate people whose contact with birds is not limited to this. Swallow nests on the house produce a lot of dirt, soiling the outside walls and the ground below. But it is not that easy to do something about the nests.
Swallow nests are protected
It could be so simple, one or the other contemporaries will think. Just wait until the swallows move south in autumn and tackle the swallow nests on the house with a ladder and broomstick. You should refrain from doing this, however, because swallows and their nests are protected.
- Of the Paragraph 44, paragraph 1 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act prohibits the removal of swallow nests. This also applies to those that are currently not inhabited. The reason for this is to be sought because swallows have been nesting on people's homes and in cattle sheds for a long time. Due to the extinction of farms in favor of factory farming, however, many are suitable breeding grounds disappeared, so that especially the barn swallow, which only nests inside buildings, is the habitat has been lost.
- By the way, the penalties for measures against swallow nests are quite sensitive. Especially when the swallows or their young are injured, the law is no joke. So you have to come up with something else to do something about the swallow nests.
So you can still protect your home
Although you cannot get rid of existing nests, there are ways and means you can do to protect your home from swallow nests. However, these are sometimes a little time-consuming, so you might want to think about whether nesting swallows really bother you that much.
- You can build a so-called swallow house. This consists of a long pole with a round, stepped roof under which the swallows can nest. You may be able to prevent the birds from nesting next to your house. However, that is not certain.
- Much more sensible, although something in common with animals, is to stretch wire in front of the critical points on your facade. So it is not possible for the swallows to fly to the desired places to build their nests. You can of course only use the wire method if there are no swallow nests on your house wall.
Unfortunately, swallow nests are now a rare sight in many settlements ...
