Hundreds of different wasp species live in Germany alone. As a rule, however, one means in this country the state-forming species such as the common or the German wasp when one generally speaks of "wasps". The following article reveals how these develop and when they die.

Wasps - Development and State Building

  • The time when a new wasp state will be founded is in spring. A young queen forms this after hibernating.
  • From last year the queen still carries the semen of male wasps in her semen bag with her and fertilizes their eggs with these, which they put in the individual cells of a small, newly built nest drops.
  • When the eggs break has a lot to do with the prevailing environmental conditions such as temperature. If everything goes well, a larva will hatch from the wasp egg after just five days. This is fed by the queen with a porridge made from hunted insects.
  • The larva strips off its skin several times as it grows. After about eight days it spins a cocoon and becomes a doll.

  • The first generation of a new wasp state formed in this way consists exclusively of worker bees, which now includes hunting, nest building, feeding the larvae that come after, and all other work take over. This way, the queen can fully concentrate on reproduction. In addition to other workers, this also creates drones (i.e. male wasps) and young queens.

When the insects die

  • A wasp state lasts from spring to late summer or early autumn. The respective queens also die when the season comes to an end.
  • The individual animals of a state, however, have a much lower life expectancy and can only live about a month.
  • Only young queens with a full seed bag survive the winter, who then ensure that a new wasp state can be built up next year. At the end of the year, they too will die again with their state.
