What is the torque

Our everyday life is hardly imaginable without machine support. The areas of application of our technical achievements use physical processes and knowledge, which are taken for granted for our civilized standard. For very few people the question arises: "What is the torque?". The details of the associated physical process are quite interesting. The following explanations are intended to give you a little insight into this.

Physical background to "Torque & Co"

  • As already mentioned at the beginning, machines are designed to energy to channel in order to specify them for special process flows. Man has understood how to make physical forces manageable in a manner desired for the intended purpose by manufacturing mechanical components.
  • However, every machine needs the supply of drive energy, which enables the desired process to run in the first place. This can be done as part of an external supply (e.g. B. Electricity), but also by initiating a physical reaction from which the machine itself derives its drive energy. For the second variant, therefore, elements are required which can be referred to as fuel in the broadest sense.
  • A machine is thus able to change the available energy in a framework dependent on the type of construction and to convert it into specified power according to your conception. An extremely effective form of power transmission here is torque.
  • The name in itself is meaningful and describes what is meant by this form of power transmission. Due to its physical effect, the torque is ideally suited for driving vehicles or airplanes. How this energy is ultimately adapted depends on the design of the respective machine. This may result in further physical challenges that the construction in question must withstand.
  • The intensity of the torque depends, among other things, on the force that acts on the so-called lever arm and is thus passed on as part of a rotational movement.
  • Electric motor - explanation

An electric motor is the counterpart to a generator. While the electric motor ...

  • The fixed point is referred to as the lever arm, which represents the fixed connection to the rotating body and thus enables the rotational movement in the first place. The resulting centrifugal force develops another center of forces, which is located on the opposite point to the force-absorbing lever arm and an identical volume of energy owns. That is why one speaks here of a so-called force couple.
  • Furthermore, the point of transfer of force to the lever arm plays a role that should not be underestimated. The farther away the power transmission acts from the fixed point of the lever arm, the more effective the power development within the framework of the speed. This is where the physical property of swinging comes into its own.

The ecological torque for the best possible efficiency

  • Ultimately, torque is the force that makes a motor work. The areas of application here are extremely diverse. Probably the most common area of application for an engine is motor vehicles.
  • This is where the engine speed works, in interaction with the gearbox in HP / KW and gives a car its liveliness and speed. Every motor has an optimal speed or an optimal torque, which enables a particularly gentle and energy-optimized running behavior. In the case of a motor vehicle, the optimum engine speed is also expressed in more economical consumption.
  • However, torque also plays a major role in mechanical engineering in workshops. This refers here to the maximum load limit that can be exercised on an element. In particular, this can have fatal consequences for the screwing together of machine components. In order to always use the correct tightening force here, which guarantees optimal durability of the fixed component and the components protects against damage, the use of a so-called torque wrench or similarly applicable measuring devices is essential.

Even when dealing with safety-related components on a day-to-day basis, one should therefore not fail to recognize the aforementioned rules. If in doubt, it is certainly more advisable to consult a specialist here.
