Dat - what you should know about the data type
- In principle you can use the website "Endings"find out which one software they are to be opened. You can also use this function as an app on your iPhone load. There you can also see the platform on which the corresponding software is running and you can view book tips and software information.
- In the case of Dat files, the search for "Endings" yields 59 hits. It is a file format that can be of the most varied types - from Winmail to virus patterns to text.
- So try to find out what kind of data the file is. If you have received the file by email, ask for the original format.
- Make sure that the file does not contain any viruses by scanning it with virus software (for example with the freeware AntiVir).
How to open the file

Convert NPF file - here's how
If you have an NPF file on your PC, you can usually do little with it ...
- First make a backup copy of the file by right-clicking on it and Select "Copy", then right-click anywhere on your PC and "Paste" Select.
- Now rename one of the two files by right-clicking on it and replacing the last three letters "dat" with "doc".
- Now open the newly created .doc file with word processing software, for example Open Office. If this does not work, try to open the file alternatively with the picture & fax viewer or with Powerpoint as graphic to insert.
- With a simple text editor (available for download free of charge from the Internet and also in Windows included), text-based Dat files can also be opened and edited.
Open Dat files from a Winmail attachment
- To open a dat file that comes from a WinMail.dat attachment, you can ask your sender to have the Format for sending messages changed to "Text Only" (this can be done via the menu Extras, Options, Email format).
- Or you can use the software Fentumto convert the text back to the original format. Save the software and also the dat file on your PC on the desktop. Then drag the Dat file onto the Fentum icon - the software will now open so that you can extract the file.
