Block Facebook smileys with Firefox

If you are using Mozilla Firefox as your web browser, you can block the image with which the individual smileys are generated with just a few clicks, thus deactivating them:

  1. To do this, start Mozilla Firefox, open Facebook and log in with your login details.
  2. Then click on any friend in the lower right corner and send them a message with any smiley.
  3. Then right click on the Facebook page and select the "Show page information" entry almost at the bottom.
  4. Now switch to the second tab from the left "Media".

  6. Now you can all media like pictures that are shown to you on the current page. Now scroll almost all the way down until you can see an image with the different Facebook smileys available. This is a "PNG" file and the type specified is "Background".
  7. Now put a checkmark next to "Graphics from".
  8. Close the window and restart Mozilla Firefox.
  9. If you now log in to Facebook again and send or receive smileys, they will no longer be displayed to you. You can display your smileys again by unchecking the box following the same procedure and restarting Firefox.

Use ad blocker to deactivate

Alternatively, you can deactivate the specific image and thus also the smileys with an ad blocker:

  1. To do this, you would have to download and install a free extension for your web browser, such as AdBlock for Google Chrome.
  2. As soon as the add-on is activated, you can create your own filter lists in its settings. In the case of AdBlock, for example, you would have to right-click on the AdBlock symbol and then click on "Settings" and "Custom Filters".
  3. Then enter the address for the image that will be used for the Facebook smilies on the websites to be blocked.
  4. You can find out the address under Google Chrome by sending a smiley face, then right-clicking on the Facebook page and clicking on "Investigate item" at the bottom. Then switch to the "Resources" tab, open the Facebook address under "Frames" on the left and then look for the image with the various Facebook smileys under "Images".
