How to measure sugar levels

There are handy, electric blood glucose meters on the market. These are simple to use and can be used by a layperson as well as a specialist. Depending on the manufacturer, these differ slightly in appearance and operation. Please read the instruction manual. You need the right test strips for each device. Only correct execution will produce a correct result.

  1. Have the utensils you need ready.
  2. Wash your hands and dry them off. So that any residue on the skin do not falsify the result.
  3. Insert the test strip into the blood glucose meter. This will now switch on automatically.
  4. Prick the side of your finger with the lancet. Middle, ring and little fingers are suitable. Diabetics should prick their fingertips from the side so that any sensory disturbances due to frequent pricking (repeated daily tests) do not impair the sense of touch.
  5. Hold your finger at the suction point at the end of the test strip so that the drop of blood is sucked up. The device will now automatically start measuring. In the meantime, use the cloth or cotton wool to press the stitch area to stop the bleeding.
  6. After a few seconds, the blood glucose meter will give you your sugar level.
  7. Write this down.
  8. Now throw away the test strip and the cloth. The device switches off automatically. Put it aside with the rest of the utensils until the next measurement.

Rules for Getting Accurate Sugar Levels

  • Do not measure without washing your hands first.
  • Do not take hold of the test strip by the suction point.
  • Do not use lancets more than once.
  • Do not store the test strips out of the box.
  • Pay attention to the expiration date of the test strips.
  • Also make sure that the measuring field is sufficiently filled.

The measurement process is always carried out in the same way, regardless of whether it is before or after the meal. Talk to your doctor about exactly when to determine your sugar level.
