Create transparency of layers with the GIMP

Gimp is an open source image editing program. It's similar to Photo Shop but it's free to use. You can do pretty much anything that other photo editing software can do, all you have to do is know where to go. These instructions provide assistance on how to create the transparency of a layer.

You need to add a new tab.

This is how it works with Gimp

  • If you are used to working with Photo Shop, you can switch to Gimp quite a nerve. Although there are identical functions, they are operated differently.
  • Would you like to use Gimp multiple pictures you should load them into a document under "File" with the item "Open as layer". In this way you can first edit the individual images as a layer before you combine the layers into one image.
  • Once the individual levels have been inserted, you should first create a little overview. To do this, go to the "Toolbox". The functions of the currently selected tool are available under the various tools. With the functions you will find a small gray square with a gray arrowhead on the right side (looks like an upside down play symbol). This can be used to add new tabs.
  • For an overview, please add the "Levels" tab. Now you have an overview of the layers and can easily control the opacity of the individual layers. The lower the opacity of the layer, the higher the transparency. If you want a layer to disappear completely, i.e. to become completely transparent, set the opacity to zero. Under "Mode" you will find further presets that you can use.
  • If only a certain area is to be made transparent, first set it under "Layer" -> "Transparency" -> "Add alpha channel". Then select the desired selection tool and mark the area that is to be made transparent. Once you have selected the area, go to "Layer" -> "Transparency" again and select the "Alpha threshold value" item. Set the value to the maximum here and the selected area will become transparent.
  • Make png format transparent - this is how you proceed

  • If you only want certain colors to disappear, you can simply use the "Select by color" tool. Take the tool and click on the desired color in the layer, then press "ctrl" + "x" and the color is cut out. It is important for transparency to always select the right level, otherwise Gimp cannot know where something should be made transparent.
