Origami comes from Japanese and means fold (ori) and paper (gami). Origami has won over people from all over the world in recent years. Those interested don't just fold at Christmas. Origami accompanies households, schools and is used in therapies. The folding techniques are easy to learn. By bending and turning the paper, shapes and animals are created. Cutting and gluing is not necessary. Learn to make an easy origami.

Origami models made with square paper

  • If you are making an origami, use a square piece of paper measuring 15 by 15 centimeters. You can also get other sizes like 20 by 20 centimeters.
  • You have the choice between origami paper, printing paper, elephant skin, wrapping paper or napkins. As a beginner, it is best to use printed or origami paper.
  • Origami paper comes in different colors. The classic origami paper is colored on one side, the reverse side is white. You can also buy paper colored on both sides, sometimes with patterns, in stores.

  1. Put the square paper on the table. The colored side faces down.

  3. Fold the diagonal lines. Put tip on tip. Open the paper after each fold. There are fold lines on the paper.
  4. Take an outer point and fold it up to the center line. Don't open these folds. Repeat the process until all four corners are in the center.
  5. In the next step, bend the four corners that result from step four to the middle.
  6. Are all corners folded in half? Open your paper completely so that it is in front of you in its original size. The folds created a lot of lines. Use the fold lines as a guide.
  7. Crease the paper inward at the first and third fold lines.
  8. Open the upper end by folding the paper outwards at the second diagonal crease. Do this step on the other side as well. If the sheet lifts up, press it down flat.
  9. Repeat step eight on the other side.
  10. Fold your paper in half so that the top is open. Your figure now looks like a ship. Lay your sheet of paper across in front of you.
  11. Fold the outer tip down. Orientate yourself on the oblique line in the middle of the figure. Gently lift your paper to crease the center point. Repeat the instructions on the opposite side.
  12. Bend your figure in half and lay it with the upper point in front of you.
  13. Fold the top tip a little bit outwards and inwards. This creates a visible fold.
  14. Hold the crease created with two fingers and open your origami butterfly by moving the wings to the left and right.

Make a popular, light origami animal - the crane

For the crane you choose colored paper. If you are making several cranes, use different colors so that you get colorful origamis. You can set highlights by working with sample paper (see picture).

  1. Put the square paper in front of you. The printed side is facing down.
  2. Fold the sheet in half and open it again. Repeat this process with the opposite side. They fold at right angles. When you open your folds, you will see lines crossing each other.
  3. Take your sheet of paper and fold it across. Make sure that one point is on top of the other point. Open the sheet and repeat this process for the other side.
  4. Turn your paper over so the white side is visible and a point is facing you.
  5. Press in the middle of the sheet and the sheet will bulge upwards.
  6. Take the right and left tips and fold them down. Both corners are on the lower point. Press the upper part down so that the corners are on top of each other. The lower part is open. You have created four wings with the folds.
  7. Take the first right edge and fold it to the middle. Repeat this step with the left side. The figure is reminiscent of a dragon with two folded wings.
  8. Bend the top of the figure backwards. Check the corner edges so that your folds are flush.
  9. Open the wings again (see step seven). Take the lower tip and gently pull it up. Your figure resembles a ship. Push the raised part down. This creates a diamond.
  10. Turn your figure over and repeat steps seven through nine.
  11. Place your origami figure in front of you with the open side down. Fold the right and left wings of the open side to the middle edge.
  12. Turn your figure over and repeat step eleven with the other side.
  13. Bend the wings of your figure upwards at an angle and then open them again.
  14. Open the insides of the wings and slide them outwards. Folding it over creates a break on the outside of your origami.
  15. Fold the top wings of the figure down until they stop. On either side (right or left), bend the narrow crease once at the top. With this kink you create the head of the crane.
