Pack a shipment of books over 1000g

A book shipment has the advantage over a normal shipment that it is cheaper than a letter. However, there are some limitations. For example, if the shipment weighs over 1000g, you can no longer send it as a book shipment. Certain regulations also apply to the packing of a book shipment so that it is accepted by the post office.

A book shipment may contain books, brochures, maps or sheet music. However, neither a letter nor a postcard may be enclosed. However, you are allowed to put an invoice in the envelope. In order for Swiss Post to be able to check the content, the book shipment must be open; you should keep this in mind when packing.

Book shipment weighs over 1000g - what now?

  • If you suspect the shipment of books is over 1000g, you should weigh it on a digital scale.
  • If the book and cover weigh more than 1000g together, you cannot make a book shipment out of them. Such are the regulations at the post office. In this case you can put the book in a cardboard box or in a large envelope, or in wrapping paper. You can seal envelopes, cardboard or paper in the normal way, because Swiss Post will not check the contents.
  • In addition, you can now include whatever you want with the book. It doesn't matter with letters or parcels.

What should you watch out for when packing?

  • If the book shipment does not weigh more than 1000g, you can benefit from the cheaper postage. However, you should note that book shipments, with an average delivery time of 4 working days, take longer than normal letters or parcels. If the shipment is urgent, it is better to invest in a little more postage and - depending on the weight - send the book as a maxi letter, for example.

  • However, if you have decided to send the books, you can still pack the book, but the packaging must be open for inspection purposes. A larger mailer is best for this. However, do not glue this shut, just turn the flap over. To prevent the book from falling out of the cover, use scissors to drill two holes in each through the folded flap and the envelope and close it with two so-called Sample bag clips.
  • You also have to mark the book shipment as such. To do this, write the word "Büchersendung" in the address field on the envelope.
