"The nine doors" from 1999 is a mystery film by Roman Polanski. The plot is - in keeping with the genre - pretty intertwined. Above all, a mysterious woman keeps puzzling the audience.

"The nine gates" - that's what it's all about

"The nine doors" was released in 1999 and comes from the controversial cult director Roman Polanski. The main role, an antiquarian named Dean Corso, is played by Johnny Depp. This same antiquarian is sent out in the film to compare three copies of the mysterious book "The nine gates into the realm of shadows". One of them is said to have been written by the devil himself and contain instructions for entering his kingdom. Little by little (spoilers!) Corso finds out that every book contains a part of the solution. His life is always in danger, but is always saved by a mysterious woman. In the end, this woman also brings him to the solution of the riddle, so that it is finally Dean, to whom the gate to Satan's kingdom opens. However, the identity of the woman is not clarified in the entire film, so that many fans wonder who she is.

The mysterious woman and who she really is

  • The mysterious woman, who is played by Emmanuelle Seigner in the film, always appears in the film when things get tough for Dean and bailed him out. That is why many suspect that she is an angel.
  • But in the end, it is she who helps Dean open the gate to hell. Thus, it is clearly on the "dark side". That, in turn, leads most viewers to believe that they either have a witch, a demon or even the devil himself.
  • It makes sense that she could be a witch or a demon, because in mythology both species serve the devil. So it could well be that the devil sends one of his henchmen to lead Dean to him.
  • In the audio commentary on the film, however, Roman Polanski says that she is not a henchman of the devil, but the devil himself.
  • Beastly - the end of the film and differences from the book

Readers of the book Beastly are mostly surprised by the end of the film. The reason is the ...

That could solve the riddle, but it's not that simple. "The nine gates" is based on a book, the novel "The Club Dumas" by Arturo PĂ©rez-Reverte. In this novel, too, the identity of the lady remains in the dark - Polanski cannot know who she is really supposed to be. So it is only his opinion that the woman is Satan. But it is possible in any case.
