Without diarrhea through the summer despite the heat

diarrhea in itself is not a disease. Experts speak of a symptom and diarrhea when you have a bowel movement three times a day and the stool becomes more fluid. Likewise, the amount of stool is much more in the case of diarrhea (at least about 250 grams).

  • Especially in summer, when you go on vacation, diarrhea in the heat is not uncommon. It is usually harmless in healthy people and you can expect it to go away in a few days.
  • Watch out when diarrhea strikes infants, pregnant women, sick people, and even the elderly. In this case you should consult the doctor directly, as the immune system in the organism is somewhat slower and the body's own "police" cannot stop the viruses and bacteria on their own.
  • Bacteria are often to blame for the diarrhea, even when it is hot. It's hot in the summer and you drink a lot, which is good too. However, if what you are drinking is too cold, followed by ice cream and hot coffee, it can upset the intestines.
  • When you travel to the south, foreign bacteria can irritate the intestines, for example through an unfamiliar diet. Usually, however, the cause of diarrhea, even in the heat, is not known.

  • When you have diarrhea in the heat, you lose a lot of water and salts. You have to make up for that. Make sure the drink has sugar, salt, and potassium in it.
  • When you are traveling, do not forget the special electrolyte powder in your first-aid kit. You can buy this at the pharmacy. The powder contains exactly what the body needs most at this moment: sugar, salt and potassium. This powder is also available for toddlers in different flavors.
  • If you don't have powder on hand, use half a teaspoon of salt and five teaspoons of sugar. Boil half a liter of water and add salt and sugar. You can season the drink with, for example, orange juice. However, do not give it to your child if they are under five years old because there is too much salt and sugar in this drink. You should immediately consult the doctor with your child.
  • In order to rule out an intestinal infection, you should definitely consult your doctor. He'll likely just treat the symptoms. But it is important that he examines you so that he can determine that there is nothing else behind it, for example a food intolerance.

Do not drink cola or eat pretzel sticks. This will not help and is just a rumor and absolutely unsuitable for severe water loss. Because you do not consume sugar and salt in the right proportions and cola does not give you enough water either, it contains far too much sugar. Potassium is also not included.
