Where are large rock salt deposits in Germany?
About 70% of the salt production comes from rock salt deposits and the remaining 30% is obtained from the sea or from salty lakes. But where are Germany's large rock salt deposits located?
In the past, salt was a luxury. Anyone who had salt was considered rich. With the Romans, soldiers or civil servants often received their wages in the form of salt, which is exactly where the current term "pay" comes from. Where the beginnings of salt production are in Germany
- In 1812 King Friedrich had drillings for the coveted mineral carried out in Jagstfeld near Heilbronn in Württemberg. Three years later, the workers actually reached a rock salt deposit at a depth of 142 meters.
- Today the extraction of rock salt is much easier. Workers and machines are brought into the depths by means of two shafts and the salt is carried to the surface. It is normal for more than 1,000 tons of salt to be carried to the surface in this way in one hour.
- The oldest mining salt mine is located in Stetten in Baden-Württemberg in the administrative district of Tübingen on the Zollernalb. Around 70 employees mine around 500,000 tons of salt per year.
Large rock salt deposits from today's perspective
