All programs open with Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the browser software from Microsoft. Although the well-known program is primarily intended for surfing the Internet, you can use this browser software for other purposes as well. If all programs open automatically with Internet Explorer under Windows, this is of course far from ideal. Fortunately, you can change this unfavorable behavior in the Windows settings.

  • The Windows operating system from Microsoft offers you the useful function of the standard programs. You can individually specify which files and file extensions are opened by default with which programs.
  • If you use Internet Explorer as the browser software on your computer, you can primarily surf the Internet with this well-known program. Furthermore, for example, HTML documents can also be opened and displayed with Internet Explorer.
  • Known file extensions and programs are automatically given a special program icon in Windows and are assigned directly to the respective software. This saves you a lot of time while working, because all you have to do is double-click the files with your mouse to open them.
  • As a rule, there are numerous standard programs under Windows that can be used to open very different files. There are some special programs that can open several file types at the same time, but this is more of an exception.
  • If your Internet Explorer opens all other programs and also every known file extension, this is neither ideal nor desirable. When you open it with Internet Explorer you will of course get numerous error messages, because the Microsoft browser software cannot open all other programs under any circumstances.

How to change the settings of the standard programs under Windows

  1. First click on the start symbol or press the Windows key on your keyboard. Then select the item "Standard programs" in the Windows menu.
  2. Go to "Set default programs" and select Internet Explorer in the new menu on the left.
  3. Use your mouse to confirm the second green arrow for "Set standards for this program". You will now see a list of all files and file extensions on your screen that are opened by default with Internet Explorer.
  4. Remove all inappropriate file extensions from this list and only leave the checkmarks for URLs or HTML documents in the boxes. Confirm the changes with "Save" and close the settings.

These important changes make the Internet Explorer will only open compatible files in the future. All other file extensions are no longer linked to the browser software and can be opened again with the appropriate programs.
