What is an MDS file

  • "MDS" stands for "Media Descriptor Image". This is an image file that you can use to burn data onto a CD or DVD using burning software. An "image" is an image of a CD or DVD.
  • You can also integrate the MDS files into a virtual drive ("mount") or unzip them into a folder in order to save yourself the need to burn them onto a CD or DVD.
  • Basically, it is advisable to integrate the MDS file as a virtual drive, as they are designed for this. You should only unzip the file if you want to change the content or if you want to have it permanently on your computer.

Open an MDS file with a virtual drive

  1. To be able to integrate the MDS file in a virtual drive, you need additional software. We recommend the free program "Daemon Tools Lite".
  2. Download and install the software.
  3. "Mounted" - meaning

The term "mounted" is used colloquially to denote an integrated ...

  4. After that, you need to restart your computer.
  5. Normally, "Daemon Tools" starts when you have started your system. The program is then in the toolbar and has a round icon with a blue lightning bolt. If “Daemon Tools” is not yet running, click on the “Daemon Tools” link on your desktop or open it under “Programs” and “Daemon Tools”.
  6. Then double-click the “Daemon Tools” icon in the toolbar. A window opens in which you can see an “image library” on the one hand and carry out various actions on the other. With the “image library” you have an overview of all images that you have added in the past.
  7. To add a new image, click the “Add Image” option located in the lower left corner.
  8. Now go to the folder in which the MDS file is located.
  9. Select this file and then click on "Open". The MDS file is now in your "image library".
  10. You still have to integrate the image into your virtual drive. To do this, first mark the virtual drive into which you want to integrate the image in the lower part of the window. Then select the image file from your “image library” and click on the “Include” option (the green triangle). "Daemon Tools" now mounts the image in the virtual drive that you have in the Windows Find Explorer. You can now use the content of the MDS file as you wish (open, copy, etc.).

If you want to include an image that is not yet in the "Image Library", you can also right-click on the virtual drive and then click on "Mount". Then you just have to select the image file and click on "Open".

How to unzip an MDS file

If you want to permanently save the contents of the MDS file on your computer and do not want to install “Daemon Tools”, you can also unzip the file. The free program "WinRAR" is available for this, with which you can also conveniently unpack the common archive formats "RAR" and "ZIP".

  1. If you have not yet installed WinRAR, download and install the program.
  2. Then go to the folder where your image file is located.
  3. Right-click on the file and then click on "Extract here" or "Extract to ..." ("..." then stands for the name of the respective file).

WinRar then extracts the content into a folder and you can now use the content without additional programs.
