Apply for a wage reduction from the employer

Nobody is immune from emergency situations. Perhaps you've just started a new job, but won't get your first salary until the middle of the next month? Especially when the financial situation worsens, the question of a wage reduction from the line manager is often unavoidable. You can read here what options you have here and how you can best proceed.

Prefer a personal conversation

Nobody likes to talk about financial problems, especially when the problems concern themselves. In order to request a wage reduction from the employer, it is always advisable to seek a personal interview with your line manager.

  • It will be easier for you to argue in private. Prepare your arguments and give a factual reason why you need the down payment.
  • Do not seek excuses when talking to your manager. Explain your situation. Your employer is not obliged to respond to the claim. However, if you present your claims in a personal conversation in a comprehensible manner, you will rarely be denied the wage deduction.
  • Prepare for the interview. It is often helpful to have your employment contract read through. In some cases, regulations for wage payments are listed here. Most employers agree to pay out a third as an advance payment.
  • There is no written application form for the wage deduction. Nevertheless, you should submit a written application after the interview so that it can be presented to the payroll department. In the letter, refer to the conversation you had with your manager and the relevant date.
  • Is it customary to pay a deposit when placing the order?

Even if a down payment is not necessarily common when placing the order, it inspires ...

  • Do not justify the rejection request in detail in writing. It is enough if you briefly outline the reason. Since you are referring to the conversation that took place with your supervisor, you can do without a detailed explanation.

Sample letter to claim the wage deduction

  1. The letter must contain your name, your address, the current date as well as the company address and the respective department.
  2. You can begin the letter with the sentence "in relation to the conversation held on... with Mr / Ms ...".
  3. In the following you declare your wish. "I hereby request the payment of a wage deduction on ...". Don't set the date too short. The payroll department may have to forward your application to the tax office first.
  4. Now briefly explain the reason for your request. As an example sentence, you can use "Since I am in dire financial straits due to unexpected events ...".
  5. For example, if your request is related to a defective car that you use to get to work, you can use this reason. A defective heating system in your home is also a reason. You should not cite personal reasons that can be traced back to your own fault.
  6. At the end of the letter, say thank you and sign the letter.

Reasons for a wage deduction

Financial emergencies arise for many reasons. Anyone who urgently needs money, but sees no other way than to demand a wage deduction, should be clearly aware of the reasons for the demand.

  • Important reasons, such as a defective heating system in your home in the winter months, are the top priority to justify a wage reduction. Especially if you have children, hardly any employer will reject your application.
  • A defective car, which you urgently need to conquer the way to work, is also a good reason.
  • Perhaps you are just starting out in a new job after receiving social benefits for a long time? This can also be a good argument in favor of a wage reduction. Your employer will understand that you will have a hard time making the month leading up to the first salary to dispute with the last social benefit paid. The travel costs and expenses that arise in everyday working life represent enormous expenses that are difficult to cover by social benefits.
  • Temporary employment agencies often offer their employees the opportunity to split their salaries. This is often necessary as most temporary employment agencies do not pay out until the middle of the following month.
  • The first month that you are employed by the temporary employment agency can therefore be financially difficult to manage. Talk to your rental company about a split salary payment.
  • Under no circumstances should you apply for a wage deduction because you want to buy an expensive electrical appliance. A new television set or a high-quality cell phone are not reasons that justify a wage reduction.

Before you apply for the wage cut, however, you should be aware that your regular salary will be reduced by the amount of the cut when you next pay out. Although you can, under certain circumstances, agree that the discount will be offset against several salaries, you still have significantly less money available for at least one month. In any case, plan this in your bill so that no new emergency situation arises.
