The transmission in the Golf 1

The Golf 1 was built with a manual and an automatic transmission. In contrast to modern current vehicles, the transmissions of the time are still quite simple.

Two variants of a transmission were installed in the Golf 1. If you buy such a vehicle used, you have the choice between a manual transmission and an automatic transmission. The former has four gears, the latter has three.

How a gearbox works

  • The transmission can also be referred to as a converter element. It is able to change the speed and the acceleration. This also affects the distance, because if you select a higher gear, you can travel at a higher speed and cover the distance in a shorter time.
  • A gear transmission is built into every car, including the Golf 1. The gears are mounted on shafts, these have different sizes and are parallel to each other. By switching the shafts are shifted against each other so that the teeth can mesh in different ways. In this way, the rotary movements can be transmitted. With upshifting or downshifting, you influence the gradation, the speed and the torque and thus the speed that the engine can afford.
  • Torque and speed can also be reversed. Then you have engaged reverse gear, but you can only drive at a slow speed.
  • The connection between the engine and the gearbox is established by the coupling. In order to be able to switch, you have to interrupt this connection briefly. This happens when you press the clutch.
  • Automatic transmission clutch defective - you can do that

An automatic transmission takes over the shifting for you, so that you can concentrate fully on driving ...

The manual transmission of the Golf 1 has four gears and one reverse gear. Operation is carried out by an Hcircuit.

The automatic transmission in the Golf 1 has three gears

  • An automatic transmission works just like a manual transmission, but you as the driver do not have to use the clutch. The switching process is automated by an electric servomotor and a hydraulic cylinder.
  • There is a clutch actuator that takes care of the separation, while a transmission control unit calculates and ultimately carries out the gear change. With the Golf 1, you will notice a slight jerking during this process.

Which gear you choose should depend on your personal preferences. There are drivers who are very fond of shifting gears and not want to use an automatic transmission, and there are others who feel better when they don't have to shift gears. In general it can be said that an automatic transmission has a higher fuel consumption and that it is more sensitive. A manual transmission is more robust and has a slightly longer service life.
