How to winterize a box tree - this is how it works

Of the Boxwood is often used as a hedge plant or as a smaller bed frame. It can be cut very well and can be made into any shape. That is why these plants are often found as potted plants on terraces, where they have been trimmed to a ball, cone or other shape.

There are many different varieties of boxwood, most of which are well winterproof. Therefore, if you have planted a box tree in your garden or created a hedge from these plants, there is nothing to worry about.

• But remember that the boxwood, as an evergreen plant, also evaporates water through its leaves in winter. In longer dry periods, you will therefore have to water your plants in winter as well. This should only be done on days when the temperature is above freezing point, otherwise the roots will freeze to death.

• If it snows, you should knock large amounts of snow off the plants to prevent the branches from breaking off.

How to make your container plant winter-proof

Container plants are generally more exposed to the cold than plants in the garden, because the pot ball freezes through much faster. This is why you also have to protect plants that are actually winter-proof during the frosty periods.

• Place the bucket with your boxwood in a protected place, for example directly against the house wall. There it is protected from the cold wind in winter, which can easily dry out the leaves.
• The location should be partially shaded or shady, but still light so that the box tree does not evaporate too much water through its leaves in sunny winter weather. In addition, the pot ball is then not overheated in the sunshine, which often causes very big problems for potted plants when it freezes again at night.
• Wrap some fleece or bubble wrap around the bucket, place it on a styrofoam or wooden board to protect it from the cold from below, and don't forget to water it. This way your boxwood will survive the winter well.
