Of course there is a difference between external and internal breathing. How does it express itself, however, and what does external breathing actually mean?

How breathing works

Breathe, then you can body be supplied with oxygen, which is essential for life. There is also a difference between internal and external breathing.

  • The activity of breathing resides in the spinal cord, which is controlled by the breathing center in the brain. The carbon dioxide (waste product) is excreted through exhalation.
  • When you breathe in, the air rushes into your lungs, and first through the nose or the mouth, then through the throat and larynx, trachea and bronchi. Once the air has reached the lungs, gas exchange takes place there. This means that oxygen gets into the blood.
  • Then the cycle continues so that the oxygen is transported into the cells. Carbon dioxide is "exchanged" by the cells in the blood. The carbon dioxide is exhaled through the airways and lungs. Outwardly, you can tell when you breathe: the abdomen and rib cage rise and fall.
  • The exhaled air consists of four percent carbon dioxide and 17 percent oxygen, while the inhaled air consists of 0.03 percent carbon dioxide and 21 percent oxygen.

The difference between inner and outer breathing

There is an internal gas exchange that takes place in body tissues and an external one that takes place in the lungs.

  • The difference between internal and external breathing is that internal breathing is also called cellular breathing. This means that the tissues are supplied with oxygen and guided to the body cells. The carbon dioxide is, so to speak, "carried away".
  • In this way, the cells can take up the oxygen from the blood and release the carbon dioxide into the blood. All body cells are supplied with the vital oxygen. The oxygen is broken down into water and carbon dioxide. In this way, the organs and the like receive the energy they need for vital processes. All of this is controlled by the breathing center in the brain - both consciously and unconsciously.
  • The difference to external breathing is also called lung breathing (alveoli). This is the absorption of oxygen from the air when you breathe in. Your blood is thus supplied with oxygen. If you breathe out, the waste product carbon dioxide is "disposed of".
  • In technical jargon, the alveoli are also referred to as the structural elements of the lungs. They look like small vesicles, and in the lung tissue they look like a sponge. This is where the gas exchange takes place between the blood and the so-called alveolar air (the air you breathe in the alveoli).
